Website Development

I've been building websites for over 16 years, and dedicated much of that time to learning how to put together a technically excellent and pixel-perfect front-end, with the best possible performance and usability.

No-code development

I prefer to build websites using no/low-code platforms; it means my clients can work collaboratively with me and maintain/update the project whenever they like.

I usually recommend using Webflow for website development projects. I have also built my own Webflow hosting service, allowing clients to make use of Webflow's excellent editor, CMS and more, while delivering the site completely for free on Netlify.

Server-based API development

While no-code platforms focus on front-end web development, they can be extended using external APIs. As a full-stack developer, I can extend your Webflow site with your own API, enabling you to build your own membership systems, databases, payment gateways and more.

Custom apps and components

I love working on complex projects with a lot of moving parts and logic, such as advanced forms and quizzes, membership sites, eCommerce and more.

I have worked on simple but fun quizzes, all the way up to full-featured invoicing and task management apps.

Whatever can't be done on-platform can be achieved using custom code or external APIs. As a full-stack developer, I like to think the sky's the limit, and in the unlikely even that a job is too large in scale, I can help get the team together that you need.

Server Development

As an experienced full-stack developer, I truly enjoy working on demanding and complex server-based projects, while delivering best-in-class performance, security and extensibility.,

No-code development

While I can work within any environment, I specialise in crafting advanced and complex applications for use within Webflow and Framer.

When you have a simple or static site that requires server-based functionality (such as user management or authentication, payments, or communication between several external APIs and databases) you'll need your own server-side application to handle the data. That's where I come in.

Wized vs Bespoke

As an early adopter of Wized, Finsweet's API connection app, I can extend your website with the power of any external REST API, including databases, email providers, payment gateways and more.

When we require something truly bespoke, we can start from scratch, building our own API. You'll be able to use the API to talk to your database and other services, and even share it with third parties with your own API documentation.

Content management

For content management sites that need to go beyond the functionality of your platform's built-in CMS, we can look at an additional content later, such as Hugo or Decap, allowing you to manage your CMS from GitHub, with advanced editing and versioning capabilities.

To go one step further, we can create our own CMS using Supabase to store all of your content, and a custom API to load your content on-the-fly.

UI/UX Design

As a tech-first web developer, you'll always have confidence that my website and app designs aren't just a pretty face; they're also ready to be built, right away. That means they're technically correct, well-structured and optimised for performance.

Before designing for any complex feature, I'll prototype it in code first. I design with the build in mind, using best-practice approaches, and without any doubt over technical feasibility.

My designs have a distinctive character: they're fun, simple, and great to use. I focus on typography, colour and structure, and avoid the use of too much image and video content, keeping your performance and visitor retention scores high.

Micro interactions and Lottie animation make using the website fun, and UX research means that we can ensure all your visitors know where to go and what to expect, every time they visit - increasing organic growth and conversion, too.

Plus, to sweeten the deal, I'm also an illustrator and sound designer. That means we can always add that extra special dimension with complex audio experiences or bespoke illustrations and icons.

Ethics & Best Practices

There are a lot of things to consider when you want to build the perfect website: performance, SEO, accessibility, performance, security, copyright, data protection, website carbon, and usage limits, just to name a few.

I call these ethics & best practices, and not enough website owners give them the consideration they deserve. Paying heed to these practices ensures high visitor satisfaction, lower costs and a lower negative impact on your users and the planet.

As part of my development practice, I can provide simple and readable reports on various metric, including performance, SEO and ethics, with recommended action points and itemised estimates.

I'm a certified web content accessibility specialist, and can help you get your website up to state required standards for accessibility. I'm also expert in performance, SEO, website carbon and more, and it's always my pleasure to jump in and help optimise a website in whatever respects we are able.

Audio & Sound Design

As an Audio Engineering BScD graduate, I'm also a freelance sound designer, audio recordist and multi-instrumentalist.

Sound design for web

Sound design is not often made part of a web project due to browser restrictions and user habits, though adding an audio element to your projects creates a truly unique and memorable experience for visitors. Rich sonic experiences are bound to be widely-shared online.

Audio identity & music creation

Websites with a large amount of sound or video content, such as tutorials, webcasts, conferences or podcasts, may also require the development of an audio identity.

This is a selection of sound recordings or pieces of music that relate to the brand. Think of a catchy jingle or audio ident: that's the goal. I may be a web developer by day, but I love getting involved in audio or music projects with my clients too.

Technical Consulting

When you would like to build your website or web app yourself or in-house but wish to make use of expert skills and knowledge, I'm also happy to consult with you. I offer consultation calls, Loom video guidance, research and reporting to help inform your tech stack or future processes.

I can put together guidance for you on whatever areas are necessary, from development best practices and optimisation reports, to website carbon reduction and step-by-step to achieve WCAG standards.

I can also conduct user experience research on your behalf, inviting users to assess their experience with the application, A/Bing different designs and user journeys, and compiling the results into easily understandable reports and videos.

I can always jump into the project for any complex technical requirements that your team is unable to complete, too, even for 5-minute jobs.
