NIConnect

Real-time safeguarding PWA connecting neurodivergent trainees with dedicated consultants, so a request for help is never missed.

Neuro Inclusion Works pairs neurodivergent trainees with dedicated consultants throughout their placements, but there was no reliable way for a trainee to signal they needed support, or for a consultant to know who was even available to respond. Check-ins happened over phone calls and texts, which didn't scale past a handful of people and left no record of what had happened.

I designed and built NIConnect, an installable Progressive Web App with three role-based dashboards (admin, consultant, trainee), OTP login instead of passwords, and a live event system that turns a single tap into an instant, trackable notification.

What we did

Trainees had no quick, low-friction way to flag when they needed help, and consultants had no live visibility into who needed support or who was free to respond to it.
Problem

No reliable, real-time way for a trainee to signal distress or for a consultant to see who needed help.

Solution

Built a one-tap status system — I'm fine, need help, need urgent assistance — that creates an event, notifies the trainee's assigned consultant instantly via push notification, and automatically escalates to a fallback admin pool if it goes unanswered.

Consultant availability was tracked informally, over chat threads and memory, making it hard to know who was actually reachable at any given moment, especially around breaks.
Problem

No structured way to know which consultants were on shift, on a break, or free to help.

Solution

Added self-service scheduling with day/time availability blocks and 30-minute break management, so the system always knows who's reachable before it tries to notify them.

Trainees, consultants and admins each needed very different tools from the same system — a single generic dashboard wouldn't suit safeguarding, oversight, and simple status-reporting equally well.
Problem

A one-size-fits-all interface doesn't work for three roles with very different needs and, in the trainees' case, very different comfort with technology.

Solution

Built three distinct role-based dashboards on a shared Appwrite backend, installable as a PWA on any phone home screen, so trainees and consultants get exactly the tools they need without an app store install.

The Results

NIConnect replaced ad hoc phone and text check-ins with an auditable, real-time system: every status change is logged as an event, escalates automatically if it isn't picked up, and gives admins full visibility across every programme.

Built with SvelteKit 5 and Appwrite (auth, database, storage and serverless functions), with web push for urgent notifications. The result is a lightweight, installable tool that fits into how trainees and consultants already work, rather than asking them to learn a heavyweight case-management system.
